YouTube Is Also A Social Network!

Six hours of video per minute were uploaded to YouTube in 2007. By 2010 the figure had increased to thirty five hours per minute. By the end of 2011 the figure had risen to sixty hours per minute.

As a result, YouTube is now streaming four billion online videos every day (up from three billion every day in May 2011) which is the equivalent of more than half the world’s population watching a video every single day!

The above stats are certainly impressive but are you making the most of all the YouTube features when recruiting for your company?

How To Make The Most Of YouTube’s Sharing Features

YouTube is more than just a place where you can get videos hosted for free and watch funny videos. In a relatively short period of time (five years) it has grown to be the largest online video sharing site in the world (with 800 million unique visitors per month) and the second largest search engine.

However, few people tend to think of YouTube as a social network and are therefore missing out on its full potential.

Even if you are not currently producing or outsourcing your own video content I would encourage you to set up your own YouTube channel. It is free to register but like other social networking sites once your username is taken it can’t be registered again.

Once you have registered your YouTube channel you can start to upload your own videos. However, rather than just publishing your videos you should consider maximising the reach of each video as well.

For example, wouldn’t it be great if you could let all the people connected to you on Facebook and Twitter know that you have just uploaded a video? Well you can, and YouTube will do it for you by automatically sharing your activities.

Simply login to your YouTube account, go to “Account Settings” and then choose “Sharing”. Then select which social network accounts you want to automatically connect to (highlighted above in yellow.) Once selected, YouTube will automatically notify your connections when a new video is added to your channel.

As well as connecting your accounts as shown above you can encourage people to “subscribe” to your YouTube channel. That way they will also be automatically notified by YouTube when you upload a new video.

What If You Don’t Have Any Videos?

If you don’t have any videos of your own you can still have videos appear on your own YouTube channel by creating a playlist. A playlist is a collection of videos (made by someone else) that can be watched on YouTube via your own YouTube channel.

For example, on my YouTube Channel for the Mobile & Video in Recruitment Conference in November 2011 I created a playlist called “mobile recruiting” and in the playlist I put videos (not made by me) that I thought were relevant and would be of interest to my viewers.

You can view my YouTube channel by clicking here or on the image below:

The good news is that you can have as many playlists as you like which means you can provide a YouTube channel with interesting videos for your visitors, without having to make the videos yourself!

Want To Find Out More About Using YouTube In Recruitment?

If you would like to find out more about using YouTube in recruitment please contact me and I will do my best to help you.

Yesterday saw the 2011 Mobile & Video in Recruitment Conference take place in London.

For the second year in a row there was a mixture of speakers offering insights into the word of mobile & video and how to best apply it in recrutiment.

And once again the feedback was that it was a great success:

“Very good, great content”

“Well worth attending, lots of great speakers and excellent information”

“Very well structured, covered a variety of topics”

“Well run, varied content, knowledgeable speakers”

“Learnt a lot, some really good advice”

I will be publishing more posts over the coming days about the conference and there will also be special Recruitment Buzz edition for the conference provided by Keith Robinson and Martin Couzins.

Recruiters have been slow to adopt mobile recruitment and are in danger of losing candidates and damaging their reputation according to Mike Taylor from Web Based Recruitment, organisers of the Mobile & Video in Recruitment Conference in London on the 17th November 2011:

Taylor spoke at the UK Recruiter End Of Year Conference last week in London where there was plenty of interest in mobile recruitment but a distinct lack of companies who had a mobile recruitment strategy in place, and Taylor doesn’t think this is unusual.

“There seems to be a general lack of awareness that it is becoming essential to have some form of mobile strategy. More and more job seekers are expecting to be able to search and apply for jobs on their mobile phone in the same way as they would expect to be able to do their shopping and banking using their mobile phone” said Taylor.

Retailers v Recruitment

But whereas a lot of retailers and banks now offer mobile-friendly websites and mobile apps to help their customers (because they know if they don’t offer easy mobile access they will lose customers) the same can’t be said of Recruitment.

“Every time an email job alert goes out from a company there is a high probability of that email being read by a job seeker on their mobile phone. And if a job seeker clicks on a link in the email they will be taken to a website which (in the majority of cases) hasn’t been mobile-enabled. This can lead to frustrating user experience for the job seeker and can suggest to them that Recruiters don’t care about the experience they are offering via a mobile phone” continued Taylor.

Mobile Web Experience

A bi-annual survey released by Compuware in 2011 entitled “What Users Want From Mobile” showed that the majority of mobile web users are only willing to retry a mobile website (78%) or mobile application (80%) twice or less if it doesn’t work the first time. In addition, a third of them will go to a competitor site instead.

Some other key findings included:

A bad experience on a mobile website leaves mobile web users much less likely to return to, or recommend, a particular website.

71% of global mobile web users expect websites to load at least as quickly or faster on their mobile phone compared to the computer they use at home.

Nearly 60% of web users say they expect a website to load on their mobile phone in three seconds or less, and 74% are only willing to wait five seconds or less for a single web page to load before leaving the site.

Time For Recruitment To Change

“In today’s mobile world every business should be making it easy for people to visit their website, whether through a mobile phone or mobile device. If a website is down and can’t be accessed through a traditional desktop pc or laptop then swift action is required to get the website up and running again. Unfortunately for some mobile web users they are seeing the equivalent of a website being “permanently down” as they are unable to view it on their phone.

With the majority of Recruiters not having a mobile recruitment strategy in place who is taking responsibility to ensure that job seekers can view their website, anytime, anywhere, using any device?”

Rob Wescott – Managing Director – Career Player will be speaking at the 2011 Mobile & Video In Recruitment Conference.

Rob will be speaking about “How to attract High Quality Applicants for your Vacancies through Online Video.”
